the indoor fitting room for those frigid l.a. afternoons and early evenings.

be forewarned, there may be a little gypsy girl in there writing stories and giggling to herself.

The Old Zoo

A few weeks ago we took our morning walk along a trail by the abandoned site of the Old Los Angeles Zoo. A few clicks of the camera captured here. As we walked by these empty buildings and cages, I couldn't help but wonder which animals could've been housed here, in these too-small habitats of aluminum siding, wire and concrete.

Mildly eerie, yet strangely peaceful. What do you think this could've been?

Doll Making.

This past Christmas holiday, the husband and I aspired to give handmade gifts to our kiddies. It was a TALL order. Most of our wonderful and heart-felt ideas are still just that - "ideas" in our little blue notebook. Oh well, next year I promise to begin working on Christmas more than 3 weeks prior to the big day.

I am happy to say, though, that two projects (the husband and our older son made the Donut - our four year old - some sweet wooden blocks ... to be blogged about at a later date ... ) were completed successfully. And I was able to make our little winky noodle, Amelia, five soft and cuddly fabric dolls. Quite easy to make too, even I was able to follow the instructions.

I found the pattern and how-to video (thanks Martha and Emily Martin for sharing your clever crafts with the world!) here.

With a little felt and some vintage fabric remnants, I cut my pattern pieces.

And, while the Winky Noodle was at school I plugged away at completing these lovelies.

A gypsy encampment existed in the open territories of Lyons, Illinois along Ogden Avenue in the early 1900's until it was forced out by commerce. The land is now occupied by a car dealership.

The day we finally met in person. Here's Nicole in our fitting room ... gallery ... hanging feather room ... magical forest.We chatted and gabbed for quite a while, like we'd known each other for years.

Nicole and I are working on swap boxes, as we speak (this is my first-ever swap-box swap, I'm having so much fun gathering items to put in the package!) ... so, I should feel a little guilty commenting on her blog twice (soon to be three) to try and win her goody box, right? But, I really really would like to have that pendant, as well as the wonderful things inside the box. So ... the conclusion I have come to is ... GO FOR IT!

Greetings kind folks, who read our humble blog! Have you met Florence Hartigan? Well, if not, today is your lucky day because we have two purty special videos to share with you.

It's now November 17 - a few days after I first posted this piece about the wonderful Matt Schaefer. Eugene just shared this snippet of Matt performing "Mad World," so I had to share it with all of you. Matt preceded by dedicating it to the recent suicides of those students who were harassed and ridiculed for being gay. Take a look at all our faces as we listen intently to his words. As of this moment, these lyrics have a whole new meaning to all of us in the room.

Two years ago, our customer ... turned model ... turned friend, Micha, made this darling little frock especially for our little Amelia. Micha duplicated the pattern from a vintage dress she bought from our shop - made a teeny tiny version with some amazing thrifted fabric from her collection.

The day Micha surprised us with this sweet gift, she asked that once Amelia outgrew it, may we return it to her, so she could one day share it with her future munchkins.

It seems that the day has come. Our favorite dress, made with love by her faerie sister, is now too small.

The first time 'Melia wore the dress - to the downtown farmer's market.

She just turned 4.

These amazing oils were created by Ashley Taylor Stuart. We've been awaiting their arrival for the last few months, eagerly checking Ashley's blog, appropriately called The Amazing Tales of Dr. Clock to see her progress. So, this past Saturday, she surprised me with a visit to the shop, artwork in tow. I was so happy to see her, I think I yelped.

One of the great joys in running your own business, err shop, err space or whatever it is we have here. Are the absolutely wonderful people we get to meet. We would like to introduce Miss Lucy and Rob (he’s the one with the beard) they were kind enough to stop by the shop the day they were heading back to England.

After having some financial difficulties in England they decided to trip about the US. They spent six months in the states using L.A. as their hub. Its funny how you have kindred spirits all around the world Lucy came in here wearing a beautiful brown dress with swiss dots and was thinking that’s a dress we would have in the shop. I was going to ask her if she would want to be one of our models.

They are contemplating opening a children’s vintage shop, which would be magnificent. They are great team those twoJ

They have inspired us to travel the country, then Europe, then Asia, and then the world - kids in tow.

They have played a few fridays in our shop and we absolutely love them. I was going to post one of their songs with some of our pictures but found this instead.

They will be playing the ultimate enid and edgar show with Sister Rogers and Evan Vidal this saturday not here, but at timewarp music. Go figure:)
